Queen Elizabeth’s Elephant
Posted in Miscellaneous, Theatre on February 21st, 2011 by admin – 0 CommentsThis new comedy play has been developed in partnership with Chalkfoot’s audience. Following an exploration of myths, legends, historical accounts and local memories with three community groups, Queen Elizabeth’s Elephant – based on an account of the Queen’s visit to Sheppey in 1582 - was voted the best story for development by the communities taking part.
The story is….
It is June 1588 and the people of a small Kent town are awaiting the arrival of royal gift. But this is no ordinary present: Queen Elizabeth I is sending them an elephant.
The townsfolk – to whom elephants are exotic, mythical beasts – have no idea how to deal with such a creature, so they enlist the services of self-styled elephant “expert” Dr Jan De Bleecker, newly arrived from Holland. With plans for the festivities under way, the town is split between those who fear the elephant’s arrival and those who see an opportunity to cash in on curious visitors. At the centre of the whirlwind is Mayor William Garton, a colourful figure with big ambitions for himself and his town.
This wonderful story is coming to The Tower Theatre for one night only. Chalkfoot Theatre Arts and Philip Dart (The Director) are always welcome at the Tower and will be making their third visit with ‘Queen Elizabeth’s Elephant’.
