Welcome to the August edition of the Quarterhouse newsletter. With the Folkestone Triennial up and running it’s been a busy summer for everyone here and we are now forging ahead with what looks set to be a great Autumn Programme. In fact, we’re a little over-excited about what’s coming up and couldn’t resist giving you a few tasty morsels. As for the rest of the programme, stay tuned people……
 Folkestone Book Festival 2011
Our most popular and enduring festival returns from Friday 4 to Saturday 12 November. Once again we’ll have a packed line-up of literary events and guests from the worlds of history, radio, television, music and comedy. Here are just a few snippets to whet the appetite….

6 November – Mitch Benn & The Distractions – Ode To Warrior Tour 2011/12

Multi-award winner Mitch Benn and his band take to the road in a two hour show for music and comedy fans of all ages. Mitch’s most recent single I’m Proud of the BBC was a massive hit both on and offline.

11 November - Robin Ince’s Bad Book Club

Is hideous prose and ghastly poetry more fabulous than great literature? Determined to find out, award-winning comedian Robin Ince has spent most of the 21st century rummaging through charity shops, jumble sales and even the odd skip.

A Town Unearthed and Canterbury Christchurch University present a fascinating evening from historian Andy Brockman focussing on our continuing fascination with Ancient Rome followed by a screening of recently released film The Eagle starring Jamie Bell.

 Skabour Festival 2011

The second installment of the Skabour Festival takes place from Friday 2 to Sunday 4 September. With over 20 live bands plus scores of DJs the event will include free daytime revelling and evening ticketed events at the Leas Cliff hall and Quarterhouse.

Current kings of Ska and Reggae, The Dualers have gained a huge following with recent sell out gigs at the O2 Indigo. Support comes from London based The Skanks.

11 August – Essential Killing. Cert: 15
A Taliban fighter is captured by American forces after killing three US soldiers. On arrival at a European detention facility he manages to escape. Battling to survive in the unfamiliar terrain, harsh winter climate and evade his captors he attempts to find a way home.

18 August – Killing Bono. Cert: 15
Two brothers attempt to become global rock stars but can only look on as old school friends U2 become the biggest band in the world.

Saturday 6th August Honk Jr

2.30pm & 7.00pm Culmination of the hard work put in by the children and staff of this year’s summer workshop. Honk Jr tells the story of the Ugly duckling in a fabulous musical. Those who saw the previous shows presented by the workshop children know they are not to be missed and this is no exception.

Wednesday 10th August Panto Meeting

7.00pm A get-together to talk about this year’s FHODS pantomime, ‘Mother Goose’. This is the night to find out the songs, the script and the parts available. The bar will be open.

Friday 12th August Lucy Pamper day

7.00pm Come along the Tower and be pampered. All funds raised are to support FHODS star Lucy Freeman in her next year at drama school in New York.

Tuesday 15th August Auditions

7.30pm On Friday 2nd September FHODS and Look Now Entertainment will be bringing a new show to the area. If you have talent or the ‘X’ factor come along and audition. The auditions are open to all potential stars or any age. If chosen at the auditions you will be performing at the Tower Theatre in this new show, called Live at the Tower.

As part of their summer Tour of the South of England. This is a coup for the Tower Theatre as the MYJO are one of the finest youth orchestras in the country. We’re back with June news! If you have been thinking we have been a bit quiet of late it is because the Creative Foundation team who bring you Quarterhouse, the Festivals programme and the Creative Quarter, also manage the Folkestone Triennial and we have been busy working on what looks set to be a fantastic summer!

We have a new emailing system which means that we can now send out updates across all of our activities. We will shortly be sending out a Triennial newsletter, please adjust your preferences if you would like to receive these updates. QH Quarterhouse Summer Programme 2011

The new summer programme is available to view online. Higlights include rare stand up from Phil Jupitus (20th July) plus 3 nights of Edinburgh Previews from Dave Gorman (4th - 6th July). We are continuing to grow our theatre offering with the fabulous Bear Trap Theatre production of Bound (11th July) and another exclusive Edinburgh preview in the form of Transport Theatre’s Elegy (30th July). Bluesky Pie brings us the final of the eagerly anticipated Battle of The Bands (2nd July) and the fantastic Gallows (7th July) are treating us to a pre Sonisphere Festival warm-up gig.

We have opened our film programme out to vote this august, more details can be found below. Also along the film theme is a special event organised by A Town Unearthed and Canterbury Christchurch University. Swords and Sandals: A Roman Film Night (31st July) will feature a fascinating talk from historian and archaeologist Andy Brockman on our continuing fascination with Ancient Rome and will be followed by a screening of the new Roman epic, The Eagle.

Triennial The Folkestone Triennial 2011 Public Launch Day.

Join us on Saturday 25th June for the official opening of the Folkestone Triennial 2011. From 11am the Harbour area of Folkestone will be full of street theatre, music, workshops and more including the amazing Balkan-Gypsy band Aistaguca and Kent based samba band Samba Pelo Mar.

There will also be family tours from Scandalmongers plus an introduction to the many Triennial Fringe projects at The Cube (Adult Education Centre) Fringe Fair.

The Folkestone Triennial runs from the 25th June to 25th September and sees 19 specially comissioned artworks in public places around Folkestone. For more information visit www.folkestonetriennial.org.uk

Workshops Summer Family Fun!

There are a whole host of great family activities taking place throughout the summer. Fizz Family Sundays continue at Quarterhouse with the welcome return of Theatre of Widdershins with the fantastical Three Billy Goats Gruff & Other Furry Tales on Sunday 26th June. The show is preceeded by a special Triennial themed FREE workshop for ticket holders - Origami Boats. The workshops take place at 11.00am and 12.15pm in the Quarterhouse Foyer and must be booked in advance.

Following the huge success of their popular BBC TV show (Little Howard’s Big Question) Big Howard and the animated six year old Little Howard will be at here on Sunday 17th July with Little Howard & The Magic Pencil of Life & Death. Accompanying this show will be another FREE Triennial themed workshop Mermaids & Sea Monsters. The workshops take place at 11.00am and 12.15pm in the Quarterhouse Foyer and must be booked in advance.

Summer Arts, Crafts & Food Fair
Stallholders will showcase their wares along the Stade, providing an eclectic mix of artistic and culinary delights in a beautiful harbour side setting. Taking place on the last sunday of every month (weather dependent) from 10am to 4pm.

New Additions
We would like to extend a warm welcome to new retail tenants that have joined the Creative Quarter recently. At the top of the Old High Street you will now find the fantastic cafe patisserie Fresh & Easy and delicious tapas restaurant Toro Tinto. They are both well worth a visit! We are also looking forward to the imminent arrival of two more ventures in the form of Beano’s vegetarian cafe/bar on Tontine Street and Hallets cafe bar lounge restaurant opening in the newly refurbished number 35 Old High Street.

Look Out!
Keep an eye out for a brand new mural! An eye catching schematic Underground-style map of past and future Triennial artworks will soon be appearing on Tontine Street. The artists involved are UCF Visual Arts students Joe Grey, Annmarie Chapman, Beth James and Lola Godoy, plus a team of willing helpers! Go and take a look if you’re in the area.

Fringe Folkestone Triennial Fringe

Shepway District Council and the Folkestone Triennial have actively encouraged artists, musicians, writers and arts groups from Folkestone and the surrounding areas to take part in fringe projects around the town during the period of the 2011 Triennial.

There has been a huge amount of interest from the huge creative community present in Shepway. There will be a full programme of events taking place over the summer across Folkestone and beyond.

History Resource Centre - Folkestone Library

Thursday 16th June - Meet the Ancients - 4.30pm-6.00pm - FREE!
