Following press revelations about the re-introduction of the Folkestone Air Show, it can be revealed that plans are indeed being made for this to happen.

The idea was born out of the success of neighbouring air shows at Margate and Eastbourne, which have proven to give a great boost to the local economy from tourism and business investment. With Folkestone now regarded as the place to visit and recently voted in the top ten UK destinations by the CSMA, the time seems ripe for the Folkestone Air Show to return.

Final plans have yet to be ratified and much work needs to be done. However, the idea has wings and it looks like we will see the first air show in some 9 years, with first events taking place in 2012 around the time of the 2012 Jubilee celebrations (final date to be announced soon).

It is planned to build on the success of the 2012 event to enable a full air show to be mounted in 2013, which will be every bit as good and comparable to similar shows in the southeast. A lot of research has been done and still needs to be done to ensure its success so that it will become an annual event, worthy of the tens of thousands of visitors expected to attend.

It is stressed that no council funding from tax payers will be made, with the final cost to be met purely from sponsorship, local business involvement and donations. However both the 2012 and 2013 events have the full support of Shepway Council who will work with the event teams to ensure these events go ahead smoothly, safely and successfully.

Planning of the proposed 2013 event is already at an advanced stage and those wishing to be involved by way of corporate or individual sponsorship are invited to indicate their interest and in due course will be sent a sponsorship pack.

The theme of the 2013 Shepway Air Show will be REACH FOR THE SKY, invoking memories of the role this region played in the Battle of Britain, as well as demonstrating the huge opportunities for business to invest in this emerging region.

For the 2013 there will be various Business Conventions, Art exhibitions and Entertainment provided, culminating in a weekend of ground events and air displays from the top RAF and private display teams.

The Creative Foundation has announced the details of two more artworks for the Folkestone Triennial public art exhibition this summer. The free exhibition runs from 25 June to 25 September.

NEW TRIENNIAL ARTWORKS ANNOUNCED

Norwegian artist Anne Katrine Dolven will install a huge disused 16th century tenor bell between two 20-metre-high steel beams placed 30 metres apart on the site of the former Rotunda Amusement Park on Folkestone seafront. Close to the shore the installation will have a specially cast manual handle allowing visitors to ring it. The out-of-tune bell reflects the Triennial’s universal themes of difference and dislocation.

Scottish artist Ruth Ewan’s project involves altering clocks across the town, everywhere from the old town hall to a local taxi, to tell French Revolutionary time: inserting new clock mechanisms and creating decimalized clock faces, subtly pasting this historical notion of time into Folkestone’s dayto-day life. The French Republican Calendar became the official calendar of France for 13 years. To accompany the clocks Ewan will produce a small booklet to bring decimalised time into context, narrating the violent and ideological history of a seemingly benign object – a public clock.

Designs for the People’s Guidebook to Folkestone Everywhere Means Something to Someone artwork tour is now underway. Ben Hills has been busy for months taking beautiful photographs for the locations suggested by you for the book and we are working with Nepalese translators to provide the translations. Strange Cargo will be creating an exhibition to accompany the launch of the People’s Guidebook to Folkestone at Georges House Gallery in June. TALL TALES WANTED!

Tall Tales seeks to record the embellished truths and myths of the British public. This is a project from Folkestone Triennial Lead Artist Matt Rowe who is collaborating with Marsh Academy and Shepway Extended Schools to collect more tales of strange and uncanny goings on from around Romney Marsh. These ramblings from chance encounters will be transcribed into a hand-bound compendium of regional folklore. 3^rd to 15^th: Martin Everett – Residence at Georges House Gallery, Folkestone. The exhibition forms part of an on-going body of work created at the homes of former artists and writers throughout the south of England.
