Welcome to the August edition of the Quarterhouse newsletter. With the Folkestone Triennial up and running it’s been a busy summer for everyone here and we are now forging ahead with what looks set to be a great Autumn Programme. In fact, we’re a little over-excited about what’s coming up and couldn’t resist giving you a few tasty morsels. As for the rest of the programme, stay tuned people……
 Folkestone Book Festival 2011
Our most popular and enduring festival returns from Friday 4 to Saturday 12 November. Once again we’ll have a packed line-up of literary events and guests from the worlds of history, radio, television, music and comedy. Here are just a few snippets to whet the appetite….

6 November – Mitch Benn & The Distractions – Ode To Warrior Tour 2011/12
8pm, £10 / £8 Concession

Multi-award winner Mitch Benn and his band take to the road in a two hour show for music and comedy fans of all ages. Mitch’s most recent single I’m Proud of the BBC was a massive hit both on and offline.

11 November - Robin Ince’s Bad Book Club
8pm, £10 / £8 Concession
Is hideous prose and ghastly poetry more fabulous than great literature? Determined to find out, award-winning comedian Robin Ince has spent most of the 21st century rummaging through charity shops, jumble sales and even the odd skip.

12 November – Book Festival Closing Night - 4 Poofs And A Piano: Smoke and Mirrorballs
8pm, £15 / £12.50 Friends of FBF

Following three sell out shows at the Edinburgh Festival, a successful UK tour and 9 glorious years as House Band for the BAFTA award winning Friday Night With Jonathan Ross on BBC1, the fabulous foursome are raring to go and delighted to present their Edinburgh smash Smoke and Mirrorballs.

A Town Unearthed and Canterbury Christchurch University present a fascinating evening from historian Andy Brockman focussing on our continuing fascination with Ancient Rome followed by a screening of recently released film The Eagle starring Jamie Bell.

 Skabour Festival 2011

The second installment of the Skabour Festival takes place from Friday 2 to Sunday 4 September. With over 20 live bands plus scores of DJs the event will include free daytime revelling and evening ticketed events at the Leas Cliff hall and Quarterhouse.

Saturday 3 September – Skabour Presents The Dualers
7pm, £16

Current kings of Ska and Reggae, The Dualers have gained a huge following with recent sell out gigs at the O2 Indigo. Support comes from London based The Skanks.

Our Thursday night film season continues with some great choices as voted for by our Facebook fans. Doors open at 7.45pm and tickets are £3.50 in advance or £4.50 on the door.

4 August – Submarine. Cert: 15
15-year-old Oliver Tate has two objectives: To lose his virginity before his next birthday, and to extinguish the flame between his mother and an ex-lover.
Adapted from the 2008 novel by Joe Dunthorne (one of the authors at the Folkestone Book Festival 2010). Directed by Richard Ayoade and staring Craig Roberts, Yasmin Paige and Paddy Considine.

11 August – Essential Killing. Cert: 15
A Taliban fighter is captured by American forces after killing three US soldiers. On arrival at a European detention facility he manages to escape. Battling to survive in the unfamiliar terrain, harsh winter climate and evade his captors he attempts to find a way home.

18 August – Killing Bono. Cert: 15
Two brothers attempt to become global rock stars but can only look on as old school friends U2 become the biggest band in the world.

Thursday 20 October – Eliza Carthy

We are incredibly excited to welcome Mercury Prize nominee, BBC Radio 2 guest presenter and Later with Jools Holland regular Eliza Carthy. Championed from an early age by John Peel, Andy Kershaw, Billy Bragg and Michael Eavis she has revitalised folk music and captured the most hardened of dissenters with intelligent, charismatic and boundary-crossing performances. Roll on October!

Saturday 15 October – Joe Wilkinson’s My Mum’s Called Stella and My Dad’s Called Brian

Critically acclaimed stand up, recently seen on Have I Got News For You and Never Mind The Buzzcocks. With his signature lo-fi delivery, knowingly-shabby stage presence and hilarious self-deprecating material, he is fast proving himself as one of the funniest comedians around.

Olivier Award winning Actors Touring Company present the British premiere of Germany’s most successful new play by Roland Schimmelpfennig.
A tragicomic tale of globalisation set in your local takeaway. Join Plop the baby barn owl as he journeys into the night-time world of campfires, fireworks, starry nights and moonlit adventures. With an irresistible blend of live music, puppetry and storytelling, this beautiful new show introduces an old friend to a new generation. Written especially for small people aged 3 - 7 (and grown-up’s who sleep with the big light on!)
This adaptation of the classic children’s book by Jill Tomlinson is brought to you by Blunderbus Theatre, recently at Quarterhouse with the fantastic Elmer the Elephant.

Saturday 6th August Honk Jr

2.30pm & 7.00pm Culmination of the hard work put in by the children and staff of this year’s summer workshop. Honk Jr tells the story of the Ugly duckling in a fabulous musical. Those who saw the previous shows presented by the workshop children know they are not to be missed and this is no exception.

Sunday 7th August Auditions

2.30pm Open auditions for the play ‘Kindly Leave the Stage’: Director Maxine Burrows.

Wednesday 10th August Panto Meeting

7.00pm A get-together to talk about this year’s FHODS pantomime, ‘Mother Goose’. This is the night to find out the songs, the script and the parts available. The bar will be open.

Friday 12th August Lucy Pamper day

7.00pm Come along the Tower and be pampered. All funds raised are to support FHODS star Lucy Freeman in her next year at drama school in New York.

Tuesday 15th August Auditions

7.30pm On Friday 2nd September FHODS and Look Now Entertainment will be bringing a new show to the area. If you have talent or the ‘X’ factor come along and audition. The auditions are open to all potential stars or any age. If chosen at the auditions you will be performing at the Tower Theatre in this new show, called Live at the Tower.

A talk explaining the background to this ancient area of Folkestone and recent key-hole excavations by local archaeologist Richard Cross. Taking place at St Mary and St Eanswythes Church. 7pm. FREE.

Kent & Medway Funding Fair 2011.
13th April Folkestone Academy. 9am till 4pm.
2011 sees the return of the successful Kent and Medway Funding Fair. Organised by Action with Communities in Rural Kent, the fair will provide an opportunity for Kent and Medway voluntary and community groups to meet and talk to a range of local and national agencies that can offer funding, grants or advice on the best ways to apply.

Summer 2010 Lights Up Productions in conjunction with FHODS are presenting our biggest and best ever show:   ALL  SHOOK  UP  will be at the Tower Theatre, Folkestone from Wednesday 11th August –Saturday 14th August with performances every evening at 7:30 pm and an extra Saturday matinee performance at 2:30 pm.    This hilarious 1950s comedy musical features all the hit songs from Elvis and the show guarantees that your entire family will be jumpin’ out of their blue suede shoes!
