Art Exhibition & Auction Sale :
13th~16th April 2011
The Art Deco Suite @ The Grand
the leas, folkestone , kent ct20 1tx
When surreal comedian Vic Reeves unveils a collection of over 200 items of his art at The Grand on The Leas Folkestone, anyone hoping for something brilliant and barmy he certainly will not disappoint with his playfully deranged paintings of distorted animals and an unusual self-portrait dressed as a sort of Hilter-esque Lion.
While most people know Vic best for his hit TV shows, like Shooting Stars, he is well-respected in the art world, with his works selling for four-figure sums. His artworks are big draws at art fairs and exhibitions.
Previous exhibitions include the Royal Academy summer exhibition, Saatchi Gallery London, EyestormGalley London, Mews of Mayfair London, the Tunbridge Wells Museum and Art Gallery, and Heathrow Terminal 5.
Vic studied art at Sir John Cass College in Whitechapel, London , in the mid 1980s, and it was setting up a performance art piece, called Vic Reeves’ Big Night Out, at a local pub that led to a chance meeting with fellow comedian Bob Mortimer, who soon became part of the act. The pair was then snapped up by the BBC and fast became household names.
However, Vic has always considered himself an artist before anything else, and has painted every day for many years. At the VIP preview last night, Vic Said ‘I don’t like to not be busy. People in TV and filming aren’t really that busy. I write for maybe four hours a day and then that allows me to spend plenty of time painting.’
He adds: ‘It’s always terrible to let go of them, but that’s the nature of it. I’ve started doing more landscapes recently. I’m still learning all the time, but I thought people would probably rather have landscapes on the wall than some of the huge portraits I had been doing that some people found rather sinister.’
It is the Vast Book of Knowledge original illustrations that prove the most popular with buyers and collectors. Vic’s works form a wealth of over 200 artworks on display and up for sale across the weekend at The Grand, Folkestone.
