The future of nuclear power at Dungeness

The Department for Energy and Climate Change has agreed to a request by Shepway District Council and local MP Damian Collins to hear local people’s views about the future of nuclear power at Dungeness.
It’s part of the public consultation on the government’s latest nuclear strategy proposals – which exclude Dungeness as a site for a new nuclear power station.

Shepway District Council will explain the progress that has been made on talks with the government and the meeting will give you the opportunity to make your views known and ask questions about the importance of nuclear power to The Marsh.

Charlotte Harris, an artist based in Folkestone’s Creative Quarter, has won the prestigious ING purchase prize of £5000 in the Discerning Eye Exhibition at the Mall Galleries in London for her painting “Strawberries and Cream”.

Best known for winning the BP Portrait Award in 2003 at the age of 21 with a painting of her grandmother, described at the time by Sandy Nairne, Director of the National Portrait Gallery, as “extraordinary and telling”, she has turned her focus to contemporary still life paintings in recent months.

One of 250 artists who were selected to exhibit work for the ING Discerning Eye Exhibition, she was chosen by Tim Barber, arts editor, who wrote in City AM about the experience of being a selector, “It gives you a view of the creative, visionary talent that, away from headlines and trends, bubbles away constantly and quietly, making artworks that will mean something to someone somewhere, and make a house a home.

Charlotte said, “I was delighted to exhibit work at this year’s Discerning Eye and to win the ING purchase prize. I have enjoyed working in portraiture over the last few years but am now widening my subject matter and am very pleased to get recognition for my recent still life work. Strawberries and Cream reflects my love of painting different textures such as glass and the skin of fruit. By detailed inspection I like to showcase the various qualities of the objects I paint and bring them to life.”

Yvette Illsley, spokesman for Folkestone’s Creative Quarter said, “We are thrilled that Charlotte’s work has been selected for such a prestigious prize and that she continues to be recognised for her outstanding work.”

This year Charlotte Harris had also exhibited works at the 2010 Affordable Art Fairs in London, New York and Singapore and has been showing her work regularly with the Fairfax Gallery in Tunbridge Wells and Chelsea. Charlotte’s artwork can be seen on her website at www.charlotte-harris.com

I hope you may have read the two articles in the Kent Messenger Extra article recently (Martello towers plans face opposition & Bid for village green status to halt development, dated: 13th August 2010) about the proposed escarpment development. The journalist did a good job except that where it says “I have proposed that Mr Forge gives tower number six to the Sandgate Community Trust” I actually said “I have proposed that Mr Forge gives tower number six and all the rest of the land to the Sandgate Community Trust”; that way there can be no further development.

We are meeting with John Forge and English Heritage on Wednesday (18/08/10). Following that we may call a public meeting and let Sandgate decide whether they want the development and the threats for further building in the future, a deal or that we should apply for village green status and stop any development in perpetuity.

On the question of village green status I am in the process of preparing the application and I am confident that we have a significant number of evidence givers as defined by the MacAlpine case ie “that ‘significant’ is a matter of impression after analysing the evidence. What matters is that the number of people using the land is sufficient to indicate that it is in general used by the inhabitants of any locality or neighbourhood within a locality”. We have one evidence provider who started using the land for leisure purposes in 1932.

I will not subit the village green application until after Wednesday’s meeting and/or the public meeting.

A group of artists from the Folkestone Arts Collective (FAC) met at the Cabin Cafe, recently re-located to the station side of Folkestone Harbour. We began the day with an enjoyable breakfast, before making our way to the now disused and sadly dilapidated Folkestone Harbour station platform, where once the Orient Express arrived in spledour. As a group of both painters and photographers, we each sought inspiration for our respective media with whatever attracted our attention. Painters set up easels on the platform and began sketching. I had decided that my camera would be my sketchbook for the morning, recording some of the details left behind, following the demise of the harbour line. I felt a hint of deja-vu, remembering clearly the holidays I spent as a boy, walking the disused Norfolk railway track around Kelling Heath, before it was brough back to life and beautifully restored by the North Norfolk Railway:

Folkestone Harbour station is still magnificent, even now despite its crumbling state of disrepair. The huge sweeping ‘S’ of the line and its platforms must have been a spectacular sight back in its golden age. Reproduced above are a few of the shots from my photo sketchbook.
