Illustrated talk about Wells at the Opening Ceremony

Posted in Lectures, Miscellaneous on August 10th, 2010 by admin – 0 Comments

Michael Sherborne is Head of the English and Humanities department at Luton Sixth Form College. He was awarded a Ph.D. at the Universirty of Nottingham for his thesis on Wells’s fiction, which he later adapted into a book, Macmillan Modern Novelists: H.G. Wells, published under his original name of Michael Draper. He has been editor of the Wellsian and Chair of the H.G. Wells Society, and has edited Wells’s Country of the Blind and Other Stories and Short History of the World..

Michael lives in Luton with his wife and two children and divides his time between doting fatherhood, demanding college work and determined attempts to write a novel.

His biography, H.G. Wells: Another Kind of Life, was published earlier this year by Peter Owen and awarded a four star review by the Daily Telegraph, which called it:

“a brilliant portrait of the man and the writer … sympathetic but clear-eyed … packed with facts and discreetly witty

Other comments include:

“a brilliant portrait of the man and the writer … sympathetic but clear-eyed … packed with facts and discreetly witty”  Robert Douglas-Fairhurst  The Sunday Telegraph

“admirably comprehensive … Sherborne doesn’t shy away from the contradictions and imperfections in either Wells’s character or his works … a well rounded portrait of a flawed but truly prophetic figure.” Simon Griffith The Mail on Sunday

“authoritative … Michael Sherborne has an unrivalled command of the writer’s diverse output … He writes with bemused detachment and great clarity”.  Claire Harman, Times Literary Supplement

Michael will be presenting an illustrated talk about Wells at the opening ceremonies of the HG Wells Festival, at The Grand in Folkestone, Friday 17th September. Friday events are free and open to the public.

Week end ticketed events include on Saturday: a Wells walk along the leas and to the houses where Wells lived and wrote 10 novels during his stay in the area, an Edwardian tea with entertainment, a puppet show and re enactment of Wells Little Wars, complete with toy soldiers and cannons, on the lawn and a Festival dinner with guest panel Peter Sissons, Michael Sherborne, Dominic Wells and Reg Turnill, local resident and former BBC correspondent discussing the life and times of HG Wells.

Sunday events include the awarding of the prizes for the short story competition, a tea, an auction of space memorabilia from Reg’s time as the space correspondent for the BBC with NASA and a quiz. Tickets for Saturday and Sunday events can be booked by calling 01303 222 222. Spaces are limited so book early!
