“Jewellery in the Age of Victoria: a mirror to the world”

Folkestone Decorative & Fine Arts Society (FDFAS)

Thursday 23 February 2012 at 2.30pm. “Jewellery in the Age of Victoria: a mirror to the world” by Judy Rudoe. Rather than concentrating on the major figures at the top end of the jewellery trade, this talk is oriented towards the Victorian social aspects of owning, wearing and displaying jewellery.

Sandgate Farmers Market & news of Open Gardens event

At the next Farmers’ Market on Saturday, 4th February the theme will be Bramley Apple Week. As a part of the fun, Zoe is organising an apple pie baking competition. You are invited to celebrate by baking your favourite cake, pie or tart using Bramley Apples.

Bring your entry along on Saturday 4th February and the entries will be judged for their delicious taste and appearance by Cllr Robert Bliss, Chair of Sandgate Parish Council. Robert is a great supporter of our market and comes along every time - and our stall holders suggested that he would make a great judge of local culinary expertise!

There will be lots of delicious produce on sale made from apples including pork and apple sausages, apple preserves as well as pies and tarts and of course Bramley Apples!

As the winter approaches and the days grow ever shorter, the lights are still burning brightly in the Creative Quarter. With the festive season on the horizon and 2012 not far behind, the Creative Foundation is happy to report on some exciting news in and around the Quarter.

Vote for Folkestone to see Radio 1 DJ Sara Cox and comedian Rufus Hound sand sculpting in Folkestone, as their final challenge in the National Lottery Good Causes Road Trip. Where they go and what they do will be determined by public vote, so please get voting to ensure that Folkestone’s lottery-funded public art project, the Folkestone Triennial, takes top spot for the South on 18 November, and ask family, friends and colleagues to vote too. If the voting is successful the celebrities will be pitting their creativity and sandcastle-building skills against one another in a sand sculpture competition on the beach, come rain or shine! Another great Book Festival year. The Book Festival 2011 has been another succesful celebration of all things literary. Featuring a lineup of top writing talent alongisde a programme of film screenings, theatre, music, comedy and workshops, it was wonderful to see both regulars and new faces attending some entertaining and inspiring events. CHRISTMAS! With Christmas just around the corner, we look froward to seeing Santa return to his Grotto during December weekends. Watch this space for more details. Late night shopping will also be back giving you a chance to shop ’til you drop along the moonlit streets of the Quarter. More news on this coming soon.
