WINTER PLAY DAY: COASTAL PARK FOLKESTONE Thursday 24th Feb. – 11am-3pm Come to the amphitheatre area at the coastal park tomorrow for a range of fun, outdoor play focusing on natural play (whatever the weather!). Straw bales for building, leaf collages, pebble painting, bug hunting, stick weaving. Be prepared to get dirty and wear warm clothes. Children at Sandgate Primary School have put together an exhibition with help from Mrs Goldsmith - History Coordinator and Teacher.

With paintings, poems, news items from national papers from the time, wartime memorabilia and pictures from that period in history the children have put together a collage depicting WW1.

The exhibition can be seen at Sandgate Library, Sandgate High Street, Sandgate , Kent, CT20 3RR.

I will be holding a one-off energy surgery in Pent Valley Technology College between 3.30pm and 5.30pm on Friday 12th November to offer local residents advice on the free insulation and reduced tariffs that they may be entitled to. I would appreciate it if you could pass on these details to anyone you think may be interested.

To organise the surgery, I have partnered with the Home Heat Helpline, a free service set up by Britain’s energy companies to advise households on how they can keep warm and save money on their energy bills by making their homes more efficient.

This constituency has a high proportion of households entitled to free help with their fuel bills. Independent think tank the New Policy Institute recently conducted research showing that nearly one quarter (23 per cent) of households in Folkestone and Hythe could be entitled to free insulation paid for by their energy companies.

The energy surgery will take place between 3.30pm – 5.30pm on Friday 12th November at Pent Valley Technology College, Surrenden Road, Folkestone, Kent, CT19 4ED. There is no need to book an appointment, you can just turn up between these hours.

We have £10,000 to give away to good causes through a children’s version of dragon’s den!

Earn your share of £10k – it’s child’s play!

The charity team at the KM Group has teamed up with Barclays to give £10,000 away to good causes in Kent through our Junior Charity Challenge. To get your hands on a share of the pot you will need:

• A child or group of young person under the age 25 to come on stage at the Gulbenkian Theatre, Canterbury and ask our grumpy dragons for a maximum of £1,000 for your cause.
• The youngster(s) have 3mins to ‘sell’ your cause to the dragons and then answer questions for up to a further 5mins.

Last year’s event was a fantastic success with all 18 finalists receiving some cash from the dragons – many received the maximum £1,000 payout. The young representatives were the children of staff or supporters of the causes, or schools close to the applicant charity’s offices.

The deadline to apply is November 28, 2010. The event will be staged in Canterbury in February.

As part of the Aiming High project, Community Action South & East Kent are offering family day trips by coach to Howletts Wild Animal Park, Leeds Castle and Diggerland starting 16th August 2010. These family days are open to families with one or more disabled children and young people aged 0—18 years old living in or attending school within the Ashford, Canterbury, Dover, Shepway, Swale & Thanet Districts.

Trips are open to families that currently receive limited or no short break services and activities. CASE Kent’s Out and About Project is offering these trips as the management organisation for the Aiming High for Disabled Children Core Offer in East Kent on behalf of Kent County Council.

We are delivering family days and activates during the school holidays and we will be shortly publishing an activity and family days programme for the October half-term. These activities are for unaccompanied children and will be run by experienced providers who will have adequate safeguards and trained staff available to ensure that children are able to enjoy activities in a safe and cared for environment. However, these activities will not include respite or overnight care.

So if your group, organisation or indeed a relative would benefit from these family days or individual activities then please contact us urgently to book for the August coach trips as the closing date is soon or to register for details of the activity programme.

At the Queens birthday many good folk were honoured with awards - and amongst those receiving the well earned spotlight was our very own Helen Tait - Head Teacher of Sandgate Primary School and Folkestone Academy Primary.

Helen, who was made a CBE for services to education, said “I’m quite overwhelmed and very excited too. What an amazing honour, an honour I just would never have expected. I feel immensely proud to have even been considered for it.

“I just don’t even know where it came from.

“I received a letter - I came home from school and there was a letter on the table and my husband was intrigued as it had Cabinet Office on the envelope. I opened it quite innocently.

“To say my breath was taken away was an understatement. It was the most emotional moment you could ever imagine and very humbling…”

Mrs Tait grew up in Winchester but moved to Kent to start teaching in 1977, when she began at George Spurgeon - now Castle View - in Folkestone. Before she moved to Sandgate Primary she was head teacher at Tenterden Juniors and she recently took on Head Teacher role for Folkestone Academy Primary too. She added: “I’m lucky that I truly love what I do - I’m lucky to have a rich life… Kent has been very good to me and it’s a county I’m very proud to belong to

“What I feel about this whole award is that it truly is in recognition of so many people, it’s not just about me, it’s about everyone who’s connected with Sandgate Primary and Folkestone Academy and all the very fine head teachers and people at the LEA that work in Kent…and we are lucky to work with so many fine people and children in Kent”
