New Skills, New Lives is K College’s initiative to train individuals to become more employable. The College has recently merged, enhancing our offer of courses, allowing us to provide a range of programmes, from our five campuses in Ashford, Dover , Folkestone, Tonbridge and Tunbridge Wells. We also deliver programmes in outreach centres across Kent .

K College can help you with a package of FREE support

This training is focused to prepare you for real employment opportunities within the local labour market. To be eligible, you must:

• be aged 18+

• be living within the Kent and Medway region

• be in receipt of Jobseekers Allowance /Employment and Support Allowance or

• be at risk of redundancy

FOLKESTONE DECORATIVE & FINE ARTS SOCIETY (FDFAS). For our May meeting Jo Walton, an old friend of the Society, delighted us with her view of “Eric Ravilious and the lure of the everyday”, who was one of the best known artists of the 1930s and lived in Eastbourne for much of his life.

Thursday 23 June at 2.30pm – LIFE IN SHAKESPEARE’S THEATRE by Frances Hughes. Tracing the life and work of Shakespeare and the origins of the theatre and eventual rebuilding as the Globe. There will be an associated visit to the Globe Theatre on Wednesday 13 July. MEETINGS are held at THE TOWER THEATRE, NORTH ROAD, SHORNCLIFFE. Visitors are welcome at £5. A Town Unearthed: Folkestone Before 1500 (ATU) is an HLF funded community project run jointly by Canterbury Archaeological Trust, Canterbury Christ Church University and Folkestone People’s History centre. We aim to uncover, record and communicate the significant ancient history and archaeology of the Folkestone area to local and national audiences.

We are currently recruiting volunteers for the following posts. All posts will be supervised and number of hours per week is negotiable. Training opportunities may also be available.

 Web editor and co-ordinator
 Proof reader
 Support for web-content (history, archaeology, oral history, news and events)
 Communications and outreach co-ordinator(regional and national)
 Communications and outreach co-ordinator(local)
 Archivist (for our small but growing collection of books, CDs and other records)
 Visual Archivist (for our collection of photographic and other images)
 Events co-ordinator (including travelling ATU stall)
 Photographer
 Administrator - Volunteer membership, records and materials

You may also want to take part in Research, ‘Meeting the Past’: Community Events and Education or Archaeology Volunteer Groups. These meet regularly and offer opportunity to take part in activities, trips and training.

Dear ATU volunteers,

We are currently busy planning the season 2 Roman Villa excavation. Please read the following information carefully about being involved in the dig and training sessions and respond with the requested information
by email to townunearthed@canterbury.ac.uk.  Many thanks.

Schedule of the dig

*         Start date - Saturday 28th May, WEEKENDS ONLY until 11th July

*         Portacabin (for outreach display and visitor centre) arrives on site on Wednesday 15th June

*         Roman and Iron Age Living History re-enactment weekend on site- 2nd/3rd July

*         Dig continues 7 days a week from Monday 11th July

*         Target end date - Monday 29th August

Booking your place at the dig

Because of the number of volunteers involved we need everyone who would like to be involved to let us know the number of days and dates that they would like to commit to for either digging, finds processing or in an outreach capacity talking to visitors at the site.  Even if you are flexible, we would like you to commit to a set number of days and dates that you know you want to do so that we can be sure who we are expecting each day.  We will then produce a calendar to display this information on site.  Our guidelines are for a maximum capacity of 30 volunteers for digging, 10 for finds processing and 6 Outreach volunteers on site per day.  Places will be offered on a first come first served basis.

Training

We are going to be running 2 training sessions in preparation for the dig.  These will cover the rules of the site and specific guidance for diggers, health and safety, finds processing and guidance on becoming an outreach volunteer including the messages we will want to relay to the public.  It is important that you try to attend one of these sessions, even if you are an experienced volunteer as they will cover systems set up for this season’s dig.  If you cannot attend one of these, please indicate this in your email.  Depending on numbers we may run another session or arrange to brief you in person separately.
