Folkestone in Transitio
n’s oral history project is under way. An excellent first session was held at the Grand, with four participants, largely focused on their memories of the Pleasure Gardens. These were in the centre of the town, for a time with its own dedicated railway link from Shorncliffe station (Folkestone West, as it is today), where the courts and council offices now reside. It was a hub of entertainment, either side of the Second World War, with a theatre that attracted all of the big names of the day, plus tennis and croquet courts, the latter staging international tournaments (the trophies are on show in the Grand).
